Senior Program

The Senior Center was established in May 2005 to serve the Chinese/Asian seniors of Greater St. Louis. The activities are free to seniors age 55 and above. New immigrants, elderly visitors, and permanent senior residents made up the bulk of the participants.

The goal of the senior program is to promote active living among the seniors through positive interactions with peers and opportunities to learn new things. Therefore the program offers a range of activities to enhance independence, physical and mental health, social connections and a healthy lifestyle. Activities include group exercises, Tai Chi, arts and crafts, painting, singing, folk dancing, English language classes, computer classes, special topic seminars and workshops, special cultural events, outings, community activities and birthday celebrations. Twice a year, we hold a Chinese dumpling party, making dumplings (jiao tze) the traditional way and enjoy eating them also. When the weather is suitable, we arrange outings once a month to places such as the Missouri Botanical Garden, Grants Farm, St. Louis Zoo, Butterfly House, the Art Museum, apple picking, Forest Park, Mississippi river cruise and the like. The seniors also participate in community events, making contact with the community at large. To meet transportation needs, we also operate a mini-bus. Since the beginning of our Senior Program in June, 2005, we have had over 12,000 activity participations. The Senior Program has been well received in the community.

Unique Characteristics of the Senior Center:

  • Provide a space for Chinese seniors from over the world to meet and catch up with one another using their mother tongues;
  • Provide opportunities for the seniors immigrants to learn English as a second language so as to better assimilate into the American society;
  • Through sharing their skills and experiences, the seniors are in the position to contribute to the society again;
  • Promote preventive health care through physical activities and seminars on geriatric care;
  • Bridge the east and the west through celebrations of different cultural festivals.
